If the person has phoned you

DO

Stay calm
Stay on the phone with the person.
Use another phone to access emergency assistance if necessary.
Find out where the person is and whether anyone else is there.

If the person is alone and has already harmed himself or herself, or is in a dangerous situation:

Call 000. Ask for the police.
Request a welfare check on behalf of the suicidal person.

If the person has not yet harmed himself or herself:

Encourage the person to remove any firearms, knives, medications and other poisons, ropes or hoses from sight.
Try to make a safety contract with the person. Click here for more information about safety contracts.

DON'T

Hang up on the person.
